Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı participated in the opening ceremony of Sarıyer Veysel Vardal Primary and Secondary School for the visually impaired children which is designed according to the needs of impaired children and equipped with special equipment.

Education activities started in the special technology and vocational education classes which were undertaken in 12 schools within the framework of “Unimpaired Education Program” prompted under the auspicious of the Ministry of National Education in order to fulfill the special needs of impaired children.

The opening ceremony of the technology and vocational education classes designed according to the needs of impaired children and equipped with special equipment took place in the Sarıyer Veysel Vardal Primary and Secondary School for visually impaired children.

Minister Avcı made a speech at the event which began with the video presentation showing special children and their parents talking about their feelings and thoughts.   

Minister of National Education Avcı stated that a protocol which was signed between the Ministry of National Education and Turkcell on June 17 aimed at meeting the needs of special equipment requirements of the specialized training and education institutions. Minister Avcı also said the program was also geared to teach children how to write codes and specialize in software adding that workshop and class equipment need of 80 schools selected out of schools for impaired will be completed within 2 years.

Minister Avcı said that needs of 12 schools from different parts of the country had been met within the framework of this protocol.

Noting that technology classrooms in five schools, a informatics technology classroom in one school, skill course rooms in 6 have been completed this year, Minister Avcı said, “We are planning to furnish technology classrooms in 11 schools for the visually impaired and 6 schools for the hearing impaired as well as accommodation and tourism, food and beverage and handicraft workshops in 19 special vocational education centers in 2016. Needs of 36 schools will be met this year, if Allah permits.”

 

“Important needs of impaired students will be met”

Minister Avcı said that skill courses and technology classes established at the special education and vocational education centers will meet important needs of impaired children and their parents.

Noting that every student regardless of their disability will be able to benefit from technological abilities and will transform into being a producer from being a user, Minister Avcı said that allowing the participation of these special students in social life and enhancing their abilities are among the main policies of the government.

“Our approach to impaired individuals is beyond social responsibility projects and we see this issue as a national and humanitarian duty. Students in these special education schools are our priority. Due to this reason, we are working in an effort to enhance their private education environment and increase the number of these schools. Related departments of our ministry have been carrying out a number of projects in order to follow most recent developments and use them in our schools,” Minister Avcı stated.

Minister Avcı stressed the Ministry has been working in cooperation with the leading companies in the computer sector in order to develop solutions for the education of impaired students and added, “I want to thank the Turkcell administration and all the contributors for the sensitivity and their efforts to fulfill the requirements of schools and vocational education centers for impaired students.


Minister Avcı visited classrooms and chated with students

Following the opening ceremony, Minister Avcı visited classrooms and received information from the visually impaired teacher Uğur Yılmaz. Teacher Yılmaz told Avcı that he was also educated in this school and his father Hüseyin Yılmaz was among the founders of the school.

Minister Avcı talked with every single visually impaired student in the classroom and proposed them to read the true story of Akşemseddin, the tutor of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror.

One of the students said he had studied Minister Avcı’s life in the internet. Minister Avcı laughed and told the child that he will become a very good investigator in the future and he might work in the National Intelligence Agency one day.

Minister Avcı also visited other classrooms and gave a recorder to a student as a present.

“Positive efforts are unforgettable. I call on people who are devoted to charity work to contribute to our efforts in terms of education,” Minister Avcı said.

 

“They will benefit from education technologies”

General Director of Special Education and Guidance Services Celil Güngör noted that the cooperation protocol with Turkcell was signed six months ago and workshops and technology classrooms of 80 schools will be completed within the framework of this protocol.

 

“Actually, there were 10 schools in the protocol. But Turkcell completed 10 other schools in a short period of time and added 10 more schools to the project. We believe that classrooms and workshops of total of 80 schools will be completed next year and this number will increase to 100 by the end of 2017,” Güngör said.

Güngör stated that Turkcell has been acting more quickly than what was anticipated in the protocol adding that newly opened technology classrooms will fulfill educational and technological needs of impaired children as well as allowing them to benefit from the Internet in order to fulfill their needs. 

 

“We will complete more classrooms in 70 other schools in one and a half years’ time”

Turkcell Executive Board Chairman Ahmet Akça noted that “If there is support from Turkcell, then there is no disability,” is the slogan of this project and added that they have been dreaming about a country where there is no disability, where the disadvantaged citizens have equal rights with the other members of the society and where all children are supported to make their dreams come true.

Noting that they are proud and happy to be a part of this dream, Akça stated that they have lit a light for special children in their path to make their dreams come true by helping the inauguration of vocational workshops and technology classrooms in 12 schools.

“We are glad to initiate this project. We feel happy to see that concerns left their place to hopes,” said Akça.

  

 Turkcell Unimpaired Education Program 

12 technology classrooms and vocational training workshops are to completed in 5 months’ time within the framework of “Unimpaired Education Program” initiated on June 17 in order to enhance skills of impaired children needing special education and allow them to participate in the social life.   

Technology classrooms for visually impaired children in Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir and Diyarbakır; informatics technology classroom for hearing impaired children in Ankara; accommodation and tourism services workshops for mild mentally challenged children in Antalya, food and beverage services workshops in Ankara, Kastamonu and Eskişehir were opened in the first stage of the project.

Project with the budget of 7 million lira is expected to be finalized in two years and aims at providing support to more than 10 thousand students studying in 80 selected schools from 40 different cities of the country.
